A Change for the Better

Day 16|  Iuka

Rain poured down off and on all night and into the morning. Confined to Crossroads, this was the perfect time to change the engine and transmission oils. Step One: take apart the settee and remove the new oil, collection jugs, and testing kits. Step Two: gather all the tools, towels, and floor protection in the hallway. Step Three: pump out the old oil and pour in the new. Step Four: clean up. Its a simple process, but still took three hours to complete. Thankfully, however, it is done and won't need to be done again for another 250 engine hours. That will take us to just before we cross to the Bahamas in March.

As part of the oil change process we send off samples for testing, just to make sure all is OK. The clouds were still heavy, but the rain finally stopped. At 2:00 we loaded into the marina's courtesy van and headed to the post office in nearby Counce, TN, to drop off the sample kits. On the way back we crossed over the Pickwick Lock and Dam, just to see how things looked from the top. When we passed through the 63-foot lock weeks ago, we could not see all the support structures of this hydroelectric dam that became operational 80 years ago. A quick stop at a gas station provided some smiles -- not as intended, but at their grammatical faux pas.

We crossed back into Mississippi and will stay here for the next few weeks as we make our way down the Tombigbee Waterway.

Four couples gathered for dinner aboard Folie a Deux and had a great time chatting about where we've been and where we're going. We will leave here at 7:30 tomorrow morning and enter the Tombigbee Waterway with a destination of Midway Marina. This will be a trip of 55 miles with three locks in our path. We're hoping for quick lock passage to avoid a very long day.
