Back in the USA

Day 79  |  Robinson Bay to Drummond Island, Michigan  |  5.4 Hours  |  29 Miles

Mother Nature continued her performance overnight, whipping up a small thunderstorm that sent wind and waves into our anchorage from a direction not predicted and, therefore, not well-sheltered. The water was choppy, our ride was rolly, and sleep did not come easily for the first few hours. Conditions later settled down and we both slept until the alarm went off at 7:00. Robinson Bay has a sand bottom, so the anchor came up clean and we were quickly on our way.

It was another cool, damp and overcast journey. We set a waypoint just inside the US border off of Drummond Island, Michigan. Once we reached it, Barry checked into customs via an app on his phone. We video-conferenced with a border agent who asked us a few questions, primarily about our two contraband tomatoes as Barry answered "Yes" to the Do you have any vegetables onboard question. Nevermind that tomatoes are fruit, not a time for arguments. She educated us a bit on the peril caused to the US by a pair of foreign tomatoes, then proceeded to clear us for entry. Barry went up on the flybridge and lowered our Canadian courtesy flag which had flown from our halyard since June 27. We folded it up neatly and stowed it away. Who knows, we may use it again in the future. As we turned south the scene was Pure Michigan, with several large sailboats enjoying the light breeze on the Bay.

We also encountered several flag markers which we took as fishing net markers. As with anything such as this in the water, it is always best to just avoid it. We pulled into the marina and got a pump out before tying up in our slip. Drummond Island Yacht Haven will be Crossroads' home for the next ten days as we fly home for a while. Barry went out and scrubbed the decks of dirt, bugs, and spider poop. I dusted, vacuumed and straightened up the interior. The flag at the marina showed that we were back in the USA.

We joined the crews of Misty Pearl and Second Wave for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. It was great to catch up with them and compare notes about upcoming destinations. They both will depart tomorrow. We will use tomorrow to pack and ready Crossroads for a week by herself.
