Day 81 | Drummond Island to Richmond | 12 Hours | 1,000 Miles
Crossroads is officially closed up for a week. We brought out all the sunshades and canvas covers, secured the docklines, shut down systems, closed through-hull valves, and strategically placed fenders on all sides. We loaded up the loaner car and set out for the ferry to the mainland. We wanted to make one stop along the way at the Puddingstone Rock Shop. Puddingstone is the local term for Jasper Conglomerate and this shop cuts, polishes, and crafts the stone into everything imaginable including jewelry, cheese boards, and knife handles. There are two main hues of Puddingstone: gray with pink, and tan with red (my favorite). It was fun looking at all the merchandise, but luckily life on a boat prevents us from accumulating. We did pick up a magnet, some earrings and a shirt before moving along to get in line for the ferry. The one mile ride across the St. Mary's River did not take long. We were joined on the crossing by other cars and pickups and an RV, a log truck full of fresh-cut cargo, and a propane truck.
We stopped at a little diner for lunch and had a great meal and wonderful service. When we got back on the road we realized we had no cellular service and also no idea how to get to the airport. A few too many minutes of panic set in before our Google map reloaded in time to end up at the Chippewaw County International Airport. TSA screening was not quite as thorough as anticipated and luckily we had no fudge on us. We finally lifted off for a short ride to Detroit.
We passed over Martin Lake and I enjoyed watching the fluffy white clouds morph into different shapes along the way. We reached Detroit and were able to casually make our way through their cosmic wormhole tunnel to the opposite concourse.
When in Detroit, one must stop and watch the shooting water fountain. We had a three-hour layover so there was no hurry for anything. We left Detroit as the sun set and were finally bound for Richmond. Our flight arrived early and I was met by the friendly face of Nutzy on a marquis in the terminal.
Finally the Welcome to Richmond sign came into view. Barry's brother, sister-in-law, and niece had also just landed and met us in the waiting area and we all headed to ground transportation together.
It was a long day of waiting and sitting. We were quick to sleep in preparation for a busy day on Friday.
