The wind was whipping up a stink when the alarm went off of 5:30. Barry checked the forecast and it had changed significantly from when we went to sleep. We discussed options and agreed to wait a day and try again tomorrow to get to Beaufort via the ocean route. Low tide occurs here at 10:00 a.m., making a three-day trip up the Intracoastal Waterway more stressful and less desirable. Other than the wind, it was a beautiful day on the island. We went for a walk around the harbor then circled back along the beach. Houses in this area seemed to have a bit more character than the huge ones we cruised by yesterday in the golf cart. Colorful paint schemes, window boxes, and unique fencing all contributed to a more homey feel. The beach actually runs along the shore of the Cape Fear River. The sand is dark brown and hard-packed. We were wearing our sneakers and barely left footprints. Oh, how I miss those powder soft white sand Bahamian beaches. I was surprised by the number of shells in the surf, the presence of a very large jellyfish, and several large trees partially buried in the sand.
Many of the houses have arbors at the beginning of a sidewalk leading to the front porch. The most popular plant covering the arbors is the very fragrant star jasmine which is in full bloom. Also in peak season is construction as houses are readied for the start of the summer vacation rental season on Memorial Day weekend. Contractor vehicles and construction dumpsters line the streets. Several houses are getting new roofs. Pallets of cedar shakes were staged in front of this large house. A nice feature on the island are the number of public beach access points. Most have nice boardwalks leading across the protected dunes. Several cacti had sprouted amongst the sea grasses.
The Inn at Bald Head Island is popular Bed and Breakfast that fronts the marina. I spent the afternoon on Fiberglass Beach watching the ferries (commercial and passenger) come and go while doing a little reading and working on my tan. Following dinner we took another walk and ended at the beach to watch the sun set over the river. The sign on the ferry dock serves as a nice end to our stay here.
