The Need for Connectivity

Day 321  |  Warderick Wells Cay to Norman's Cay  |  3.4 Hours  |  23 Miles

Yesterday was great and I could have stayed at the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park for several more days. There is so much that we didn't see and do: miles of trails, dozens of beaches, the blow hole, and more snorkeling spots. The one thing The Park doesn't have is connectivity and, today, that was very important to me. So just after the 9:00 morning radio report, we bid Cherrie, the park hostess, farewell and slipped off our mooring ball. With an early high tide we had much more water than when we came in and our outbound trip along the string of boats was not quite so tense. Heavy clouds met us as we turned north. To the south, heavy rain was falling. Even on overcast days, the bright blue water warns of the shallows and tells you where not to go.

Our destination was Norman's Cay, where our tour of the Exumas began on March 11. There are so many things I could reflect on about our last four weeks -- the places we've been, things we've done, new people we've met, and the incredibly surreal time spent with Ti Amo. I thought about all of those things as I sat on Fiberglass Beach this afternoon and enjoyed the view. Today, however, was all about two events for which I needed the internet. First up was Senior Prom and I anxiously waited for the pictures to arrive via text. Last year I was her official photographer for Junior Prom and I sure missed not being there to share in her latest special day. Stunning.

The second major event was UVA's Final Four game against Auburn. I couldn't miss that. We settled in at Norman's Cay and got all the software installed to stream the game. Our halftime show was provided by Mother Nature. A nice orange sunset morphed to include shades of pink during dusk. Hope abounded and I was feeling good with a 10 point lead, until the Cavaliers forgot how to play and let Auburn go on a 14-point run to take the lead as time ticked away. Major pacing ensued, back and forth across the pilothouse where I was watching the game take an all-too-familiar-turn. Somehow though, it was Coach Bennett being interviewed at the end. All is good in Hooville and they survived to play one more game. The best part was the celebratory call from Aunt B when the final horn sounded. All these great experiences courtesy of a strong cell signal. Today, that was all that mattered.
