Meeting the Pink Iguanas Empty-Handed

Day 316  | Lee Stocking Island  |  .6 Hours  |  1 Mile

We pulled up anchor this morning and moved one whole mile to an anchorage toward the northern end of Lee Stocking Island. This put us in between our two primary points of interest for the day. Down the dinghy came and we zipped up to the northern tip of Leaf Cay. We made landfall on a beautiful crescent beach. Almost as soon as the anchor was buried in the sand, the pink iguanas came out of hiding and trotted down to meet us. I'm sure they were expecting a treat of lettuce. Too bad, guys. We are out of lettuce ourselves.

We walked around and marveled at both the iguanas and the view. This area is one of the prettiest that we've come across.

Following our visit to Iguana Beach we pulled into another crescent beach and set off to cross the island to the ocean side. We heard iguanas in the scrub and saw their tracks, but they stayed in the shade and let us pass. The trail led to a rocky coast that our guidebook said had plenty of sea beans. We walked carefully over a long stretch of rocks before getting to a sandy area ... back at Iguana Beach. I was surprised at the presence of sea oats growing in the dunes. We walked up and down the shore, searching the wrack for the elusive sea bean with no luck. That's OK though. It was a beautiful morning.

We headed back to Crossroads for some lunch. The afternoon mission was to hike up to Perry's Peak, the highest point in the Exumas at 123 feet. We came ashore at Coconut Beach, so named because of the number of coconut palms. The iconic downed palm tree was perfect to secure the dinghy. We worked our way up the trail which offered great views of both sides of the island. There was no sign at the top, just this survey marker.

The trip down the mountain gave us an opportunity to soak in the view of the other direction we didn't see going up. Back down to the beach, we walked the length of sand and Barry found himself two coconuts.

One final shot from the top. Back on Crossroads, Barry made quick work of his two coconuts, and got a nice harvest of both milk and meat.
