Looking For The Rainbow

Emerald Rock

The wind picked up after dark and I remember hearing raindrops at some point overnight. When I went upstairs this morning the wind was still blowing a steady 20 knots, gusting to 30. Around 8:00 a heavy shower moved in. I was in the pilot house and hurried down the steps to the saloon telling Barry to open the door and look for a rainbow. Sure enough, a full arc had formed off of our stern.

The only excitement of our day came from a call over the VHF radio. A charter sailboat way out in the anchorage was having issues with their windlass. Difficulties like this never occur in fair weather. Barry hopped in our dinghy and followed Tom and Dan in another dinghy to make a service call. After an hour of assistance, a solution was found that enabled the charter boat to continue on their journey. Barry made his way back to Crossroads, this time heading into both the waves and the gusty wind.

The rest of the day alternated between rain and sun. When clouds ruled, I needed a blanket and socks. When the sun reappeared I was able to shed those extra layers. A constant all day was the stiff breeze. In the two weeks we've been in The Bahamas, the wind as already made some significant alterations to our courtesy flag. Good thing we have a new one in reserve. The sun briefly shone through a small break in the clouds before its premature disappearance. We're hoping for a more settled day tomorrow so that we can get ashore for a hike.
