Preparing For The Next Front

Big Majors

Another week has brought another front blowing through the area. We are again faced with a forecast of strong westerly winds (and waves) with no perfect place to seek protection. We could have moved to the lee of Big Majors where there would be protection from the west swells, but would deal with sketchy holding, current swings, and a dense gathering of boats. We have chosen to remain in the more exposed, but less populated original spot where the anchor is firmly set and we have a lot of swing room. We know our Selene can handle a few hours of bouncy seas. This morning we turned our attention to making sure we did everything possible to make our ride as comfortable and secure as possible. To start with we dusted, vacuumed, and stowed loose items like fenders and shoes. By noon the dinghy was on the upper deck and Barry made sure StarLink was tight and secure. We removed our cap rail covers, but put the sleeve over our American flag. The wind gradually increased resulting in a more pronounced chop across the anchorage. The waiting game had begun. I spent a few hours on Fiberglass Beach enjoying an otherwise beautiful day. I finished book No. 9, an amazingly detailed memoir of a modern-day transit of the Oregon Trail. It was a welcome departure from the quick-reads I had previously completed.

The late afternoon view from the flybridge offered no hint as to the blow coming through tonight. The time change still has me confused and we had a late dinner because I was used to waiting until after sunset to begin preparation. The evening light show was dramatic and a late dinner was forgiven. We enjoyed the spinach we purchased the other day with grilled chicken. As usual, the most intense wind and waves will occur overnight. The anchor alarm is set and we're hoping to get a little sleep. Everything will blow through tomorrow and we'll get on with our Selene gathering on Wednesday.
