Rock Sound
It was a quiet Sunday morning in Rock Sound. The wind had calmed a bit overnight and we all planned to gather onshore after lunch. I did some reading on Fiberglass Beach and watched the cars file into the waterfront parking lot of St. Luke's Anglican/Episcopal Church. The major excitement was the arrival of a supply boat into the harbor. It first came in, stopped, and turned around. Then it came in for a second try. Energized chatter -- in Spanish -- between the bridge and the dock seemed to last for half an hour on Channel 16. Eventually, it docked, unloaded its cargo, and exited. The boats in the anchorage got an eyeful as it passed closely by. At 2:00 we all gathered at Frigate's to enjoy the view and some beverages on our last day in Rock Sound. Our group of nine had the tiki bar all to ourselves and compared notes on weather and destinations.
The four girls then decided it was time for a little bocce ball. We tossed the balls around for over an hour in a closely contested match. Susan from Dragonfly pulled away with a late rally to claim the title. We departed at low tide and admired one local skiff that was decorated with an oriental rug. [see note below] We walked back to the city dock allowing the rooster to cross in front of us. I'm quite sure he was getting into position with all of his buddies for the night-long crowing concert. The latest plan is to leave in the morning on a short trip north to Governor's Harbor.
Thanks to my cousin Deidre (a native Bahamian) for shedding light on what we saw: When my dad used to dive conch to sell to a restaurant in Nassau, he would put a old piece of carpet in the bottom of the boat like that. When he dove them, my mom could just drive the boat up to him, and he would toss the conch into the boat instead of them having to be handed off. The carpet would protect the bottom of the boat from the conch shells. It was a much quicker retrieval for my mom to drive the boat this way.
